Temperatures are starting to rise and the days are getting longer, inviting us to renew our wardrobe with lighter and cooler garments. However, the transition from spring to summer can present a bit of a dilemma when it comes to dressing, so how do you find that perfect balance between comfort, coolness and style? That's where linen comes into play, our undisputed ally for warmer days.
Dressing in linen has become synonymous with elegance and freshness. Fine and versatile, this material offers us the lightness we need on the hottest days, without sacrificing sophistication. Despite all its advantages, linen is a fabric that requires special care, both in its storage, washing and drying. At Discover by MANGO we will show you how to wash and iron linen shirts, dresses, trousers and other garments made from this material so that they do not shrink and maintain their natural beauty.
1.Prepare the garments
Before you start, remember to always place your garments inside out and do not mix colours, both very light and very dark, as linen can absorb different shades. Avoid mixing your garments with other hard or heavy materials such as jeans, as the contrast between fabrics can damage the seams.
2.How to wash linen in the washing machine?
Have you ever wondered if linen shrinks when washed? This is one of the most frequent doubts that arise when caring for this type of garment, but the truth is that even though it is a delicate fabric, it is easy to maintain its original shape when it comes to cleaning. So how do you wash linen so that it doesn't shrink? Easy: the secret lies in selecting a gentle wash programme at a maximum of 30 degrees and with a short spin in the washing machine. Use specific detergents for delicate clothes and avoid using bleach. If there are stains, treat the garment again before drying.

3.Drying
Despite its strength and durability, linen is a delicate fabric that requires careful treatment to maintain its texture and appearance. Having learned how to wash linen, understanding the drying process is crucial to maintaining its quality and prolonging the life of your garments.
As a natural fibre, air drying is the best method for removing moisture from garments. However, before hanging your linen shirts, dresses or trousers outdoors, we recommend lightly steaming them in hot water to remove wrinkles. This method is not only gentle on the fabric, but also helps to maintain its original structure and prevent warping.
Air-drying is a more environmentally friendly and sustainable option than electric tumble dryers, as the intense heat and constant movement can also shrink garments and damage the linen fibres. If you do need to use the tumble dryer, be sure to use a low heat setting and remove the garment while it is still slightly damp to avoid shrinkage.

4.How to iron linen
When ironing linen, iron at a maximum of 110 degrees and always on the inside of the garment. Linen can withstand high temperatures, but excessive heat can cause shiny or burnt linen. Ironing inside out also helps to maintain the colour and texture of the linen.
Take special care with the sleeves and placket on shirts when ironing to avoid damage. These areas can be particularly delicate and require careful handling. Use the tip of the iron to reach the most difficult areas and be sure to move the iron constantly to avoid burning the fabric.
Finally, remember that linen is a fabric that tends to crease easily. This is part of its natural charm and should not be a cause for concern. However, if you prefer a more polished look, you can use a light starch spray to help keep wrinkles at bay.

5.How to save it
Being a natural fiber, it should be stored avoiding direct incidence of light to avoid loss of color . Make sure the garment is completely dry before storing it, as moisture can cause mold and odor. For garments with collars, such as linen shirts, it is advisable to use a sturdy wooden hanger, since folding them can wear out the collars or become deformed, affecting the original shape of the garment.
Linen, with its soft texture and unmatched freshness, has become the star fabric of our summer wardrobes. But, did you know that behind every linen garment there is a story of tradition and artisanal care? Each piece is a treasure that deserves to be cared for with care and attention. So, when you put on your favorite linen shirt, remember: you are wearing a unique garment, with a history and personality of its own. Treat it with love, take care of it as it deserves and it will accompany you for many summers, always reminding you of the beauty of small details and the importance of living consciously and sustainably.
