Local Uniqueness: Hong Kong

Between tradition and innovation: bamboo transforms the space

Among Hong Kong’s steel-and-glass skyscrapers, bamboo remains an integral part of the cityscape. Lightweight, strong and flexible, this material is deeply rooted in local building culture and in a tradition that has accompanied the city’s evolution for generations. Its presence is particularly recognisable in the distinctive scaffolding that still covers some of its façades today, creating a unique image where tradition and modernity coexist naturally.

Within this context, the Mango store in Hong Kong Central engages in a dialogue with its surroundings through one of the city’s most recognisable materials. Oak, typically used as a signature element in the interior design of Mango stores worldwide, gives way here to bamboo, reinterpreting the brand’s identity from a local perspective.

Under the concept of Local Uniqueness, an initiative by Mango that seeks to connect each store with the culture, art and architecture of its surroundings, the Retail Design team turns this material into the common thread running throughout the project. Bamboo appears across different areas and elements of the space, creating a visual continuity that connects the experience with Hong Kong’s identity.

Exposed bamboo canes run along the main staircase and extend across the walls and ceilings of the entrance, creating a play of lines and volumes that complements the store’s architecture. Their natural texture and tone contrast with the green ceramic surfaces and more neutral finishes, while the rhythm of the canes brings warmth and depth to the space.

The material takes on new forms in the furniture designed specifically for the space and developed in collaboration with local manufacturers. Woven surfaces, laminated panels and details that reveal bamboo’s characteristic joints explore the material’s possibilities through different techniques, highlighting both the material itself and the craftsmanship behind it.

The result is a space where Mango’s global identity meets an element deeply rooted in local culture. An approach in which bamboo moves beyond its role as a building material to become part of the store’s visual language, naturally connecting tradition and contemporary design.

Creating spaces that speak to their surroundings and find new forms of expression through local culture is the purpose of Local Uniqueness. In Hong Kong, this dialogue takes shape through a material that has been part of the city for generations and is reinterpreted here through a contemporary lens.
